ABBERATION ZINE #1 (A5/24 Pages) 30p

This is the debut issue of Abberation and comes from Ireland, as you know we’ve got a great deal of respect for those fine folks in the emerald isle. This is no exception and there’s a fine amalgamation of fiction, art, animal rights, reviews and interviews with ol’ Mero of Rejected Records about his band the Norvics and the class Striknein DC. Good first effort and the fiction is a nice touch. The Forge, Ardamine, Courtown, Gorey, Co. Wexford, Ireland.

AVERSION #5 (A5/20 Pages) 25p or trade.

Coming out on a pretty regular basis now, Aversion is a great zine from Bradford. A little smaller this time with less info on political activism but there’s still an article on London’s Anarchist Black Cross. There’s interviews with Fleas and Lice, State of Filth and Detestation, plus a Croatian scene report, reviews and some useful contacts. For a taste of Aversion therapy get 25p and an SAE in the post. Aversion, PO Box 22, Bradford, BD2 4YX, UK.

A VIEW FROM A WINDOW #13 (A5/24 Pages) 50p

This is a new one on me and features mainly information about the Indie scene and local live appearances of bands like the Levellers, Rocket From The Crypt, etc. This is more info that interviews but has a handful of reviews. Not bad but not brilliant it could do with more content. 16 Tenth Street, Blackhall, Hartlepool, Cleveland, TS27 4EY

A VIEW FROM A WINDOW #15 (A5/32 Pages) £1.

These two came together and this is definitely more geared towards punker things. I don’t know why the change in appeal but what you have is a load of local reviews and some biogs of bands like the cool Cleatus, Speed Urchins and Inter. Plus there’s a few more reviews and a strange cartoon on the back cover! I think it’s a bit steep at £1 but maybe the editor should shop around for better copying prices and try to accost a few bands for an interview at gigs. Address as previous review.

BALD CACTUS #13 (A5/28 Pages) 40p

Another issue from Andy, nicely cut and pasted from typewriter, scissors and pritt stick heaven. Great interviews with Mark from the excellent sunny Scunny band Terminus, also there’s Mutt, Lard Arse and Chineapple Punx. Andy raises some really valid points regarding stupid animal rights activities (ie ones that endanger the activists involved) and I totally agree with his remarks on TV. Great stuff. PO Box HP171, Leeds, L6 1XX, UK.

BENDY LOBSTER #1 (A5/32 Pages) 50p

Another new zine sprouts up from the undergrowth adding yet another zine to the thriving scene of publications. It’s great to see such a vast number of zines around now and you should all support them. Anyway on with the review, Bendy Lobster is a great little zine hailing from Luton. There’s some cool interviews with Wat Tyler (and Sean’s on top form with his witty repartee), Diesel Boy, Dick Lucas from Citizen Fish/Bluurg Records, Fall out and Dagobah. There’s a good helping of reviews and a piece on David Icke, retaining local economies (ie support your local independent shops) and shop lifting in the big stores. Nice layouts and a good debut. 158 Cowper Street, Luton, Beds, UK.

CHARRED REMAINS #7 (A5/60 Pages) £1.

I love Russel’s style, apart from living around the corner from the Happy House and being a swell dude he is such a cool zine writer. Wearing his diary on his sleeve he delivers sarcastic and ironic prose about his life along with witty reviews and top interviews. Charred Remains is top of the heap in our book despite it’s old fashioned come-out-when-ya-please regularity this is one of the best zines in the UK. Numero 7 has interviews with Fugazi, Broccoli, Wolfie Retard, Texas Is The Reason; plus there’s the Sex Issue revisited part II - The female revenge fantasies, Russ’s holiday - a nudist beach and what to do when there’s a lunatic on your roof!!! What are you waiting for ?! PO Box 43, Hull, HU1 1AA, UK.

CODEYE #Summer 97 (A5/32 Pages) 50p.

This is the latest issue of Codeye from up there in Cleveland. This issue has interviews with Newtown Grunts, Apocalypse Babys, Combat Shock, Kneival and the fine dudes at Suspect Device zine. There’s some reviews, recipes, and a biog on the Adicts. Pretty good issue. 31 Marrick Road, Park End, Middlesborough, TS3 7SB, UK.

CONTRAFLOW #20 (A4/4 Pages) Donation. Along similar line to Counter Information and Schnews, Contraflow reports on class struggle, injustices and other relevant sub culture information including a calendar of events and useful contacts. COUNTER INFORMATION #48 (A4/4 Pages) Donation.

This is the latest round out of political activities nation and world wide. Always an informative read with articles on the Liverpool Dockers and Magnet Workers, a report on Anarchafeminists in Sweden plus defiance and action from around the world. Counter Information, C/O Transmission, 28 King Street, Glasgow, G1 5QP, Scotland, UK.

DIRECT ACTION AGAINST APATHY #1 (A5/52 Pages) 70p.

This is the first issue of D.A.A.A and it is a nice little zine put together by the Belfast Green Action. It has articles on the Mc Libel battle, Fair Trading, Shell, and Green Issues there’s also recipes and reviews. It kinda reminds me of the Vegan Action News mag of the early 80s. Its’ nice to see some people still with a passion and a voice to say it with. Informative and friendly, good read. D.A.A.A C/O Green Action, Q.U.B.S.U. University Road, Belfast, N Ireland.

DOES ANYONE REALLY CARE #3 (A5/12 Pages) Free. DARC is Dublins alternative Radio collective on 99FM and they put out a newsletter about what’s happening and it’s really interesting reading about what they’re doing. All power to them. Bands can send demos etc to DARC and for this newsletter or more information contact: DARC, PO Box 3327, Dublin 8, Ireland.

DO SOMETHING #4 (A5/36 Pages) £1.

Nice little zine from Co. Antrim covering what I suppose they call street punk these days - well it’s what I’d call ’77 and 80s punk and Oi - the Damned, Drones, Blitz, GBH, etc. cool bands I dug (and still do) in my early teens. In the main this zine is all interviews with the Drones manager, the Spent Idols, Red Letter Day, Boots & Braces, Guitar Gangsters, Distortion, Sonic Dolls and Combat Rock. Also there’s reviews and a write up about last year’s Holidays In The Sun shindig in Blackpool where surprise, surprise - Captain Sensible got his kit off (except for his beret)… wha-hey! Do Something, 16 Parkhall Road, Steeple, Antrim, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland, BT41 1BU.

EMISSIONS - January (A4/1 Page) Free.

This is a gig guide free sheet from the Red Eye venue in London which hosts up & coming bands. Presumably this one comes out on a monthly basis and is available through out London in all the usual kinda of free sheet places. Emissions, C/O The Red Eye, 105 Copenhagen Street, Islington, London, N1. Tel: 0171 387 4422.

ENERGY MAN POST #?? (A4/5 Pages) Free.

This is weird and a single sided copied zine cum art zine. The front cover has a load of dicks on and inside there’s a compilation of chain letters for art and zines. Fuckin’ weird but if that’s your bag and you want to get loads of free stuff as those chainletters promise, write to: Michael Lumb, Flat 1, 78 Oxford Street, Ipswich, IP1 3PE, UK.

FLIPSIDE #106 (A4/172 Pages) $6 (inc post).

This is the first time we’ve received a copy of the famous (and one of our favourite) zines/mags from the US - Flipside. This baby has been around since the beginning of time and still continues to deliver the goods. There’s so much to read and it’s all quality stuff especially the cool columns from Shane Williams and ShitEd who make some real interesting points along side the scene trippers and art-fest lovers AArtVark and Morticia. There’s some great interviews with Fifi, UK Subs, Dead End Kids, Alehop, Spahn Ranch, Asteroid B-612, The Foxations, Dystopia One, D Generation, The Remains, Daddy Longhead, John Cale, Mono Men, and Bubbly Girl. Plus obituaries to Jack Nance (Eraserhead) and Lawrence Austin, Flipside’s own awards "The Flippies" and zillions of reviews. Top US rag that you shouldn’t be without so get it now. Flipside, POB 60790, Pasadena, CA 91116, USA.

FOGGY NOTION #??? (A4/20 Pages) Free.

This is more of a catalogue than a zine but it’s a great little source of information on zines, labels, bands etc and also the sell a shit load of stuff so drop them a line for more info. 19 Pickwick Road, Corsham, Wilts, SN13 9BQ, UK. Tel: 01249 716136.

GEARHEAD NATION #35 (A5/16 Pages) Free.

I always look forward to reading Derek’s mini-zine because he cuts no dice and tells you what he thinks - a true writer. As a result his rants are always interesting to read and apart from a couple of reviews makes for one fine opinion zine. 57 Stapolin Lawns, Baldoyle, Dublin 13, Ireland or http://www.iol.ie/~insinbad

GEARHEAD NATION #39 (A5/16 Pages) Free.

Derek’s latest offering has the usual bits on local Irish scene stuff plus a piece on the latest admissions of guilt from members of the prosecution in the DKs Frankenchrist album Court case many years later. Plus there’s a whole heap on interesting views from various bods on sexism and a healthy supply of reviews. Brain stimulating as always. Address as previous review.

GREEDY PIGS #3 (A5/32 Pages) £1 ???

Jonathan feeds us another issue of Greedy Pigs - a fine blend of art, interviews, reviews and poems. Good interview with Peligro (ex- Dead Kennedys drummer’s band), Stampin’ Ground and Kickback. There’s also a biog of 70s band Subway Sect and an article on that highly resilient product hemp. Greedy Pigs,19 Brindley Road, Rugby, Warks, CV21 4BJ, UK.

GREEDY PIGS #4 (A5/32 Pages) £1 ???

Hot on the heels of issue 3 Jon does the biz with issue 4 with a great arty cover that’s reminiscent of Winston Smith’s collage work for the Dead Kennedys - top stuff. All pray to the all mighty god Barker who tells us of his visit to a body piercer to… - start to squirm lads - get a Prince Albert done, for those of you in the dark a PA is where a nice needle goes right in the eye of your dick and straight through the underside after which a little silver ball clamper is pushed through and connected out the other side. Anyway on with the zine review, great columns from John Why and Rob Filth along with interviews with Set Against, The Bus Station Loonies and Jon Doe plus reviews, poems and artwork. Greedy Pigs address see previous review..

HELL & DAMNATION/ANGEL HEART - Split zine (A5/24 Pages) 30p.

This is the 3rd issue of the fine Hell & Damnation zine and features interviews from Democratic Disorder, Face Ache, Steve from Ripping Thrash zine plus reviews, I have to take my hat off to Colin as he has the best hand written zine I’ve ever seen and he must also have the strongest wrist (take that what way you will!!). The split is with Finish zine Angel Heart and has interviews with Violent Headache and Denak plus interesting observations on Class War and Animal Liberation and some reviews. A real bargain for on 30p and an SAE.Hell & Damnation, 22 Burns Villas, East Lane, Stainforth, Doncaster, DN7 5DP, UK.

MAD MONKS #9 (A5/64 Pages) £1.50 (inc post).

The Monks have gone up in the world with a glossy cover, fancy DTP and a cover art parody of Ian "Monk" Mackaye (Minor Threat era) by top bloke Welly Artcore. Another packed issue from this top of the range UK zine, cool columns from the Monkay himself, Russ Remains, Jayne Smitten, Mike Head, Jim Hart, etc… Crackin’ interviews with Cleatus, McRackins, the Descendents, Wolfie Retard, Smog UK, Screw 32, Mutant Pop Records along with reviews and the usual trip into the unknown with cartoons and articles on all things grey and spinning saucer thingies. MAD MONKS #10 (A5/52 Pages) £1.50 (inc post).

Well this just gets better and better. Mad Monks is top class zine-o-rama with great printing and fine layouts. This time around the Monks provide interesting interviews with Ten Foot Pole, WORM, The Misfits, Brian & The Teenagers and Urko. There’s news, columns, reviews and the Fortean Times UnConvention - great stuff just buy or die! - Jerry Only says "it’s great…" or was that his band ?! Address as previous review.

MY GOD CAN BEAT UP YOUR GOD #3 (A5/40 Pages) 50p

Actually I preferred this issue to #4 (split with Small Sailor) reading and reviewing these issues arse about face! Great interviews with Wolfie Retard from the mighty Real Overdose fanzine while the others are with Diesel Boy, Blanks 77, MU330 and Extreme Menace. There’s letters, news, gossip, How To Do Your Own Zine, Cartoons, record and zine reviews. Better layouts too all making for a pretty good issue. Aaron, 6 Mowbray Place, Thirsk, YO7 1RF, UK.

MY GOD CAN BEAT UP YOUR GOD/SMALL SAILOR - Split Issue (A5/60 Pages) 50p

This is a Thirsk issue… that’s Thirsk not thirst, dummy! Despite Aaron’s (My God..) fine portrayal of how to write a zine while under the influence, My God Can… takes the first half of this split issue and has interviews with Oi band Hard Skin, Chrissie Yiannou (the zinester’s favourite PR lady with a lurvley voice!), Mutt, Homebrew, Becky Crackle along with reviews and a "I’m so pissed page". It’s pretty scrappy in places but that adds a little character. The other half is dedicated to Small Sailor which gets better each issue and this issue is no exception. Clear cut & paste layouts and interviews with Dog On A Rope, MU330, Dagobah, Blanks 77 and Ignite. There’s also the usual reviews plus some film reviews and a nice little article on the funky photocopying blues (as endured by the editors). Great issue from the high seas of the Small Sailors in Thirsk. My God…, see previous review, Small Sailor, 39 Station Road, Thirsk, YO7 1QH, UK.

NECRO NEWS #4 (A5/52 Pages) 50p (inc post)

Spike delivers a new issue of Necro News which is a lot better with cleaner layouts. Featured in this issue are short interviews with Steam Pig, PMT, Barnyard Ballers, Pork Pie Records, The Radiacs, WORM and Sick On The Bus. Very much a music only type of thang with reviews, biogs and interviews, which tends to lack a bit of content but on the whole this is a pretty decent zine and good value. Spike, 13 Kingsway, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, PE30 2EJ.

ORGAN #51 (A5/84 Pages) £1.

Like Flipside this is the first time we’ve received a copy of the totally cool zine Organ to review and boy are we chuffed. This zine has been around so long and is fucking massive that if you haven’t seen or heard of it then where have you been ? Glossy cover, a print run of 5,000!!! great layouts, wads of reviews and a great plugger of new bands. Included in this issue are interviews and features on Pin-Ups, Medulla Nocte, Gunshot, Servotron, Alien Sex Fiend, the Prophetess, Rosa Mota, F.L.S., Anti-Marilyn, The Verve Pipe, Pepperman, Earth One 9, New Toy, Above All, Philadelphia, Bluntz, Neverwood, Posh, L7, Disco Pistol and more… shit I told you it was big! Organ, Unit 205,The Old Gramophone Works, 326 Kensal Road, London, W10 5BZ, UK.

PASSIVITY=COMPLIANCE #2 (Review by David Stuart)

Personal diary stuff (extremely well written), SOEZA (I hated them but they’ve got some good thing s to say and someone must like them as well as Rich!), Bod (big time scenester/record collector type dude-cool interview), a piece on SQUIRREL BAIT and a whole slew of reviews. What I like about this zine is the personal writing, it’s moving, it’s heartfelt, it’s funny and it’s honest, I know people check out zines that have’ fave’ bands in but do yourself a big favour and get 50p plus SASE off to Rich today. Rich Levane, 15 Sparrow Square, Eastleigh Hants, SO50 9LB.

POND LIFE #1 (A5/16 Pages) Free.

This is apparently issue 5 of Being Brave fanzine - it’s a punk thing!!! This is the product of the Over The Edge Promotions and has interviews with the fine Apocalypse Babys, our pals Funbug, cool China Drum folk, top band Turtle Head and The Ex-Boyfriends. Pretty basic - nothing else but interviews but it’s free. Over The Edge Promotions, 12 The Lawns, High Street, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, GL10 2NU, UK.

REAL OVERDOSE #13 (A5/68 Pages) £1.50 (inc post).

Another damn fine offering of top notch zine fodder from the old Wolf-man in Ippoland. Great interviews with the totally cool Theo Lunachick, Screeching Weasel, Assert, the Crumbs, the Babies, Travis Cut, Savage Malignant, etc. Plus James Sherry continues his interviews with the Ramones by chatting with axeman Johnny. There’s the usual mug-shot round up of rants and raves from top zinesters, reviews and a nice little biog on Traci Lords - what a voice (ahem!) In fact just send a tenner for the next 6 issues for guaranteed top reading (cheques to J. Rulton). Real Overdose, 64 Chatsworth Drive, Rushmere park, Ipswich, IP4 5XD, UK.

REAL OVERDOSE #14 (A5/64 Pages) £1.50 (inc post).

Another corker of an issue from Tardy - how does he do it! What stamina that man has! Anyway, in here there’s interviews with Ten Foot Pole, Vanilla Pod, Burnside, Understand, Crispy Nuts, Kepone, etc, etc. There’s so much in here just buy it yourself to find out. Address see previous review.

REJECTED #19 (A5/16 Pages) Free. Mero knocks out another cut and paste frenzy which includes an interview with that top old band Husker Du (lifted from Guilty Face). There’s some reviews and a cool cartoon about tattoos plus what’s happening in Ireland and the latest stuff from Rejected Records. Rejected, 9 Woodlands Ave, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Ireland.

RIPPING THRASH/WHY - Split Issue (A5/48 Pages) 70p

This is the first time we’ve seen a copy of Why from Selby and glad we did too. A first class issue with really interesting interview questions which are fired at Mel Hughes from No Barcodes Necessary zine and Barney Greenwood (ex-Napalm Death). Also thrown in for good measure is a wad of gossip from Boston (Lincs man, not MA!) and Spain plus some reviews. Great Stuff. The flip is the old faithful Ripping Thrash and Steve delivers another blinder with the help of Paul (ex Problem Child). Interviews here with those loveable loonies Funbug and Spite plus a Lithuanian scene report and a fine helping of reviews and news. Rounding off a mighty split issue well worth a mere 70p and an SAE. Why, PO Box 53, Selby, YO8 9YZ, UK. Or Ripping Thrash, PO Box 152, Burton-On-Trent, DE14 1XX, UK.

RUNNING FEART #1 (A5/32 Pages) £1.

WHATEVER #1 (Review by David Stuart)

Superb first effort featuring MU33O, SWEET CHILDREN and GOOBER PATROL (Who are funny). Spot on reviews and most impressive written pieces, some fiction and some fact. It feels kinda weird reviewing this as my name crops up a few times, Cov’ John and The Goobers give me some stick, I get a "thanks for inspiration" in the editorial and then a little piece of how my advice in turn led to Emma putting this together. If that’s true then I’m glad I helped out in that way as this is a solid fanzine with lots to digest and plenty of energy via the written word-I like it a lot. I hope she keeps it going. I think this is 40p plus a SASE. Emma, 27 Sovereign Drive, Botley, Southampton, Hants, SO30 2SR.

YOUR SO HIDEOUS #4½ (A5/24 Pages) 50c (25p).

Well it’s been a long time since I’d heard from Ben then suddenly a letter and two issues of Y.S.H comes through the old mail box. What’s he been up to ? Well he’s been jetting about all over the god damn place - Singapore, Thailand, Australia, etc. - lucky bastard! Anyway not a man to let travelling stop him pledging his allegiance to the fanzine flag, these issues were written, laid out and printed on his travels. This one has great interviews with Opposition Party (the first punk band in Singapore), Swingin’ Utters, Carburettor Dung and Ben’s interview with Aussie Customs !! Plus there’s the usual reviews and loads of stuff about the stuff happening in Asia and Oz. Top stuff. C/O Box 0, 121 Railton Road, London SE24, UK.

YOUR SO HIDEOUS #5 (A5/24 Pages) $1 (50p).

The second instalment from this long running (previously Raising Hell) king of cut ‘n’ paste madness in the zine world. Ben continues his jaunt of the near south-eastern hemisphere before returning to good ol’ blighty and finds home in Australia. This issue mainly centres on Melbourne and has interviews with Human Error, Joe Kidd (Mr Punk Rock Malaysia), Mutiny, Spiral Objective DIY label, H Block and Coach plus articles on New Zealand, Melbourne Squats and a nice handful of reviews. For Address see previous review.
