ACID STINGS #7 (A5/20 Pages) Free. This is the catalogue of the fine aural goodies from the Acid Stings folk. There's a heap of stuff for sale for an SAE. PO Box 22, Hitchin, Herts, SG4 0HA.
BLOWN TO BITS #19 (A5/44 Pages) 80p. Well it's been bloody years since I saw a copy of this zine, so when Bazzy dropped me a few lines and this issue it was good to see him back at it. What's more it hasn't changed a whole lot and I have to admit to a moment of nostalgia at days gone by. But anyway this issue has interviews with GBH, Peter & The Testtube Babies, Torcha Shed and Bez Penike plus views, reviews, football and WWF wrestling. 91 Imogen Court, Regent Park, Salford, M5 4TQ, UK.
DIRECT ACTION AGAINST APATHY #4 (A5/56 Pages) £1.30 This is sheer inspiration, here's a zine chock full of info on political action along the lines of Counter Information and Schnews, etc. only this is bigger and mainly concentrates on action in Northern Ireland, which is excellent considering that the previously mentioned free sheets are a couple of pages and cover world or UK action this has 56 fucking pages on action in N. Ireland alone! As I said this is inspirational, it's also intelligent, articulate and very thought provoking. This zine provides a breath of fresh air in a politically apathetic society - top marks! Oh there's also a selection of reviews thrown in for good measure. Get your arse into gear and get this just to feel ashamed at how little you're doing. D.A.A.A C/O Green Action, Q.U.B.S.U. University Road, Belfast BT7,N Ireland. Email: daaa@hotmail.com, web: www.geocities.com/Rainforest/Vines/5944
DRAGG #1 (A5/16 Pages) Free. A new newsletter cum zine with really difficult to read typefaces. There's some reviews and personal views but not much else to really get your teeth into. 33 Queens Road, Kenilworth, Warks, CV8 1JQ, UK.
EXPERIMENTAL DISTRO (A5/8 Pages) Free. This is an English/Portuguese Anarchist set up that has a zine, distro plus produces comics and publications/pamphlets on Anarchist type issues. Interesting stuff and this newsletter/list has some reviews in there too. Lina and Rui, Apartado 13, 2901 Setubal Codex, Portugal.
FLOATING TURDS MAGAZINE #1 (A5/28 Pages) 60p The title doesn't exactly conjure up thoughts of pleasant nor subversive things but what the heck. A razor blade and pritt stick attack (well it beats the usual cut and paste remarks!) greets you layout wise with part type and part hand writing. This issue is a little bare and it will benefit from a couple of issues to find its own personality. At the moment it's basically small interviews with Dagobah, Knuckledust and MTX plus a joke of an interview with Snuff (jeez didn't they make the effort to answer those questions) plus a better one with Pinto and the guys at Household Name Records. 10 Westlands Ave, Slough, Berks, SL1 6AG, UK
FLIPSIDE#111 (A4/128 Pages) $8 (inc post) Another sizeable chunk of Flippy came crashing through the letterbox and as always we shout a cry of joy. This old timer is so good and has heaps of reading that will keep you occupied for days. Excellent columns on everything from home made drugs to the Lounge Scene and from Splatter movies to personal diaries to articles on unsolved dismemberment murder cases. There's some fine interviews including a great one with Cynthia Plaster Caster and her long running hobby which made her famous plus cosy chats with legends Agnostic Front and The Saints, film maker Doug Cawker and Guitar Wolf, Discount, Marky Ramone & The Intruders, Jimmies, etc. etc. Great chaotic colour and B&W layouts on newsprint which makes your fingers black. This is a necessity so get your hand black and indulge the pages of one of the US's best rags. Flipside, POB 60790, Pasadena, CA 91116, USA.
FRACTURE #1 (A4/64 Pages) Free. Well Hey, Hey and thrice HEY!!! Dave and Russ have done it - well done guys. Fracture, the mighty project that sees the fusion of Mad Monks and Charred Remains into a fine and regular (yep, a rarity for Russ admittedly) professional looking newsprint national punk magazine with a print run of five fucking thousand copies!!! WOW! This looks great, reads great and just is great. The debut issue has interviews with J Church, Painted Thin, Travis Cut, Kerosene 454, Rumblestrip Records as well as some cool articles including Russell's Punk and the Internet guide and some stuff on Food Not Bombs. There's a bucket load of reviews and some columns and scene reports. Great stuff, so make sure you pick one up in your local record shop or drop an SAE to: PO Box 43, Cardiff, CF2 3WD, WALES, UK.
FRACTURE #2 (A4/64 Pages) Free or £5 for a 10 issue Subscription. Russ dropped this around to the Happy House just in time (along with his column) for this issue. So I couldn't wait to get my teeth into it after he'd gone. Well issue 2 is even better than the first - Great Layouts and fab interviews with Dagobah, Discount, Knuckledust and the insane cyborgs Servotron. There's also a chat with the fine folks at Household Name along with the usual chunk of reviews and a cool bit on UFOs (glad to see Dave hasn't let up on those top Mad Monk type articles). Another mighty cool issue just ensure that your don't miss out, OK?!
GREEDY PIGS #6/7 (A5/44 Pages) 50p. Hell Mr Barker has really gone for it this time and delivers a very neat DTPed zine. So first off it looks good, the contents is equally absorbing with those excellent graphics of his and good interviews with John Why and Rob Filth, plus other ones with Sad Society, JPE, Grassroots Collective, Mark kelly, WORM and Combat Shock. There's the usual scattering of reviews and plenty of personal views and articles. Best issue yet only complaint is the typeface is too weeny man. Greedy Pigs, PO Box 172, Rugby, Warks, CV21 4ZU, UK.
LOOPHOLE FRIENDS & FAMILY #9 (A5/4 Pages) Free. This is the band Loophole's newsletter and with tongue frimly placed in cheek this little publication takes the rise and looks a Pammy and Tommy Lee in Pornorama and the weather. Funny and good to cheer up a rainy day. PO Box 12286, Brixton, London, SE9 6FE, UK.
NO BARCODES NECESSARY #6 (A4/32 Pages) £1. Another issue of this fine Irish rag from all round top bloke Mel Hughes. I have to say this is the best issue of NBN to date and I think it has the best interviews that I have seen in a long time. Mel has some really good questions for 6 individuals involved behind the scenes within the punk scene. Including Sned from Flat Earth Records, Jon at Active Distribution, Rich Corbridge at AWA, Brob at Tilt Distro and Stef of Empower and Nico from Outrage. There's also an interview with heavy HCers Stampin' Ground on the departure of Heath. But going back to the other interviews with particular regard to Jon and his openess about his sexual relationships and Sned on his personal reflections about childhood and adult hood and Rich's world of computers and teaching - I was left thinking what awesome interviews these are and how completely enthralling they were, in fact that's what interviews should be about other than "what's your latest release?" kind of stuff. Anyway I think you've grasped that I liked the interviews in here ?! Other stuff in this issue includes some cool columns on more people having babies (it's infectious you know) and the usual heap of reviews. Brilliant issue. No Barcodes Necessary, 83 Glebe Park, Chanterhill, Enniskillen, BT74 4BD, N. Ireland.
REALLY FREE #6 (A5/4 Pages) Free. This is a newsletter of records, gig and zine reviews plus news from the punk scene. PO Box 15, Pentre, Rhonda, Mid Glam, CF41 7YG.
RUNNING FEART #4 (A5/60 Pages) £1. Well it was good to see this one again, as I haven't seen a copy since numero uno. First thing is that it's got bigger and is still as slick with nice clear layouts. There's a deep pile of interviews inside with Oi Polloi, Pink Kross, Airbomb, Sad Society, Amphetameanies, Steam Pig, Burning Boy, Beergut 100, TrickShot (Formerly 4 Past Midnight), Trev HAGL and 3D Scream. Some are good (Oi Polloi, Steam Pig) while some hardly deserve or are worth the page space (Amphetameanies). That's a big irritation when zines take the time to think up interview questions to be rewarded with one line lame answers of a "can't be arsed" band - anyway enough of that. There's also some zine reviews, record reviews and some Exploited press clippings from Russia. Great looking zine shame about some of the interviews. 12 Crusader Crescent, Stewarton, Ayrshire, Scotland, KA3 3BI.
SAVAGE AMUSEMENT #4 (A5/12 Pages) Free. Trev HAGL's freebie newsletter on all things Punk and Oi or do they call it street punk these days ?! This bascially comprises of news and reviews in Trev's own style. Also don't forget Trev has his zine HAGL out for about 60p. 57 Briardene, Burnopfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE16 6LJ, UK.
SCARY SHEEP #1 (A5/36 Pages) 60p Well the bloke on the cover of this here new zine is scary but I don't figure that he's much like a sheep unless he has particular sexual tendencies. Anyway after you get over the title what you get inside is a great little first issue though it's not special in appearance the zine is made cool by its content which is really good. There's some nice columns, reviews and interviews with Hooton 3 Car, MTX, Travis Cut, Dagobah and Midget along with some personal thoughts and cartoons. What this debut issue has got is enthusiasm and that makes all the difference which is apparent here. Great start I look forward to further instalments. 7 Croft Ave, Orrell, Wigan, WN5 8TW, UK. E-mail: scarysheep@hotmail.com web: //scarysheep.home.ml.org
SCANNER #1 (A5/40 Pages) £1. This is the debut effort from Steve B of Stunt Child and apart from the poor output quality of some of the graphics (which I guess was due to either a dodgy handheld scanner or outputting on an inkjet or too much re-sampling in a graphics package) this zine is a real winner. There's some great layout ideas and the content is spot on. This issue has a cool interview with Joey "Shithead" from DOA, the Mad Monk with a fracture himself Dave Monk, Good Riddance, Vanilla Pod and Nemo. There's also some columns, footie and film (well he likes the odd movie you know!) stuff plus there's the obligatory sound and publication round up. Great read just a shame about the output but saying that there's many zines which look worse, I guess I'm being too harsh on that aspect. I really look forward to issue 2. 6 Chatsworth Drive, Rushmere Park, Ipswich, IP4 5XA, UK.
SHARKPOOL #2 (A5/60 Pages) £1. Well the only way I can start this review is with a grovelling apology for forgetting to include this review in last issue's round up but still including the picture of the cover - Duhhh! I have to say in my defense that last issue was a little rushed with the forthcoming offspring due and so proof reading and such like went a little out the window to say the least! So Tracy… I'm sorry gal! So on with the review… Only at the number 2 spot with Sharkpool and this fine publication has already (for me) established itself as a fine zine at a very early age. What Tracy brings to Sharkpool is a new slant on the usual zine fodder which I like a lot. The different interview questions, unique rants and raves and a nice open and friendly feel to the whole she-bang. For instance this issue's piece on getting touched up by some moron in the pit at a Lagwagon gig, I hope this sad fuck reads that and feels as ashamed as he ought to. Tracy you should have turned around and kicked the bastard where it hurts we don't need jerk offs like that in the scene or any society for that matter. Anyway this issue was a real stormer with fine interviews with Good Riddance, Danny Panic, Gameface, No Use For A Name, Chris Chopper and some sad American parody of a religious cult - The Church of Euthanasia (who promote suicide, sodomy, canabalism, etc but makes for fun reading - it could only happen in the States). Plus there's a Blind Date with Funbug (Tracy you are braver than I thought) and an Indian with the Dwarves. Top read, whatcha waiting for the blood… Sharkpool, 36 Bournville Lane, Bournville, Birmingham, B30 2LN, UK.
STEADY DIET #10 (A4/28 Pages) £1. Satpal has really gone for it this time around with a colour, glossy cover which looks great. Also it looks like congrats are in order as the baby boom expands to those with a Steady Diet - well done guys. Another fine issue follows in its usual avant garde style that is totally original even if the font sizes are tiny. There's stuff about Angel Corpse, Emperor, In/Humanity, Jenny Piccolo, Morgion, Locust, Lunachicks, Make Up, Order from Chaos, Palatka, Piss Shivers and more. Plus reviews and articles on Racial Harassment, Veganism, Indian Films, books and culture. Good stuff and chock full of shit. 4 Mainstone Close, Redditch, B98 0PP, UK.
STINKIE #3 (A5/40 Pages) Free. This is Laccie and Dave's cool distro list that's rapidly becoming a zine in its own right. There's a heap of cool stuff here including some fine columns, articles on Internet Punk, reviews and interviews with Jennie Tiny Flecks, Air Bomb and Hobbes. Great stuff and P.S. it doesn't smell - Honest! Top Flat, 1 Ryeland Street, Shotton, Flints, CH5 1DT, UK.
STYLIN' WRECKS #1 (A5/44 Pages) 50p Debut issue and bloody hell what a cool start, I really liked this zine. It has inventive cut 'n' paste layouts which looks great and I just liked the whole style of it and what's more the two guys responsible are wee young whipper snappers at the tender age of sweet 16 - err I think I can remember that far back! Anyway this has some great interviews in with the Vandals, Descendents, Ten Foot Pole, Diesel Boy, Goober Patrol, Strung Out, Voodoo Glowskulls and Panic, plus a chat with top chap Wolfie at Real OD and Sean the Bugger merchant. There's some reviews too thrown in for good measure making for an excellent debut issue, I look forward to future instalments. 68 Valley Road, Brackley, NN13 7DQ, UK.
SUSPECT DEVICE #30 (A5/70 Pages) £1. Yet another cool incendary package from Tony and Gaz as this long running zine hits the big 3-0. Not many UK zines can claim that many issues under their belts and it's a credit to the guy's continued support and inspiration of the underground sounds of the world. This issue sees short interviews with Zero Tolerance, External Menace, Strinking Pole Cats, Sad Society and Age of Chaos plus a fine rockumentary diary of the Travis Cut guys recording jaunt to the US. There's a good column section which gets bigger each issue plus the usual round up of zines and sounds. If you've got a quid burning a hole in your pocket then send it off to these guys now, if not steal one and send it for a one stop shop of fine reading matter. Suspect Device, PO Box 295, Southampton, SO17 1LW.
