This column is wanted pretty sharpish, and I'm kinda rushed off my feet doing lots of really punk rock things, y'know, getting the zine done, trying to figure out how to do a web page, changing nappies and trying to find clothes without snot, puke or poo on them. So for this issue my contribution will take the form of a huge plug for something new to come out of the SD camp.
We have spread our wings a little further to take in SD Books, with the first publication being "From Inside As Well" a book of thoughts, frustrations, infatuations, fact and fiction from the minds of David Stuart and, um, me. It's a book that we have been promising for ages, it's been written for quite a while, but other things kept getting in the way. After the initial excitement of finishing our writing, we kind of lost momentum and things kept getting in the way.
Last year was particularly hectic, David got together with Hilary and followed her to London, Sarah and me had little Becs arrive in our lives (as you will know from reading the last issue), Suspect Device zine kept us all busy, the Travis Cut album took up a lot of time and money and I even had to leave my band because I just didn't have enough time to do the things that I really wanted to be doing. Time went on. Then, for some reason, as 1998 turned into 1999 we decided that it was time to get the book done and get it published.
I found out that I could get it printed for a pretty reasonable price and SD, with out a record to finance for a few months, had enough money in the kitty to pay for it. So David got to work on getting it all up together. Hilary got involved and things started to take off, she really got things moving and put in a lot of hard work on our behalf, and I began to get more and more excited, and feel more than a little bit guilty as I wasn't actually doing that much. I got on with trying to get the zine out and tried not to feel too impatient. I failed. Then David sent me a sample of the cover, a hard copy of my stuff (which I hadn't seen for quite a while) plus some inside bits and pieces. I was blown away by the cover, very simple, yet very cool.
The inside stuff looked like a proper book, and even my stuff didn't seem too bad, although there were a couple of corrections I wanted to make. Then came the difficult decision about what name to have on the cover. I had decided that as most of the people who would be interested in the book would know me though Suspect Device, I would go under the name Tony Suspect. But, when the cover arrived it had my real name on it, and it just looked right. So I changed my mind, then I changed it again. Then I asked David to choose, then, finally, we decided to go with which looked the more 'emo'! honestly! So, now, the zine is out (and features Burning Airlines, The 'Tone & Airbomb - £1 & SAE), we're aiming to do another 7" in the summer, a split with Annalise and The 'Tone, and (as I type) the book looks as though it'll be out by the end of the week.
So, check it out, you may like it, you may hate it but at least you'll be able to feel comforted that you're not us! The title again is FROM INSIDE AS WELL and it'll be cheap, £4 post paid. If all goes well with this we aim to publish more books, so drop us a line if you want more info... PO Box 295, Southampton, SO17 1LW.
Also, the Suspect Device family has just grown a little bigger, and our quest to produce The Next Generation is complete. On March 11th 1999 Gaz and his wife Helen brought little Hazel in to our world, so I'd like to take this opportunity to say how happy I am for all three of them. SUSPECT DEVICE now has a web page. It's a little basic, but I'm only a beginner, so you'll have to bear with me until I learn how to do more flash things. Check it out at... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/susdevice
That's it from me for now, and remember to take some advice from The 'Tone and get "dancing to the Bad Manners, Lambrettas, Vapors, The Jam / Jilted John, the famous Jimmy Sham.. Alright!!"
